With the temperatures beginning to change, it's time to start thinking about spring. To be specific, it's time to start thinking about spring cleaning. If you're like most home owners, you probably already have a long list of items to take care of this spring. However, like most home owners, there are probably four items that probably aren't on your list. Unfortunately, that could leave you facing some unwanted problems later on. To make sure your spring cleaning is complete, here are three tasks that you shouldn't forget.

Get the Dirt Out of the Ducts

When it comes to spring cleaning, most people don't think about their air ducts. However, leaving the ducts dirty can introduce a wide variety of dirt, pollen and contaminants into the air. You might not realize this, but your ducts may be filled with everything from pet hair and dander, to insect droppings and carcasses. Unfortunately, that debris doesn't just stay neatly inside the ducts. Instead, the debris gets blown through the house every time you turn on your heater or air conditioner, which can lead to an increase in asthma and allergy symptoms. To avoid those problems, add duct cleaning to your spring cleaning list.

Flush the Rust Out of Your Water Heater

If you've got a plumber on your spring cleaning check list, be sure to have them take a look at your water heater. Even if it appears to be functioning properly, it could be hiding problems inside the tank. This is particularly true if your water heater is more than a few years old. As your water heater ages, it will start collecting rust inside the tank. The rust will turn your water brown, and give it a foul taste. Not only that, but it will cause corrosion inside the tank. To avoid corrosion damage, and foul-tasting water, have your plumber flush the rust out of your water heater while they're taking care of your spring cleaning tasks.

Check Your Attic for Pest Infestations

If you're like most home owners, it's been a while since you were in your attic. Unfortunately, that means you could be missing some signs of serious damage, especially if you've got a hidden pest problem. Now that spring is almost here, and you're taking care of your spring cleaning list, don't forget to check your attic for pest infestations. Look for mice and rat droppings, as well as signs that rodents might have spent the winter chewing through your electrical wiring.
